Each year we hold a service of commemoration at All Souls tide
to remember before God all who have died and to comfort one another as we find ways to live without their presence with us.

This year the service will be held at St Gregory’s Crakehall starting at 6 pm on Wednesday 2^nd November. During the service, we read out names that we have been asked to remember and offer each other the space to light a candle in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us. Lammas Tide Holy Communion

Lammas or ‘Loaf-mass’ (derived from the Anglo-Saxon Hlafmaesse) is an English feast in origin, held on 1st August as a thanksgiving for the firstfruits of the wheat harvest. Traditionally, a newly baked loaf from the wheat harvest was presented before God within the mass of that day. While the ceremony ceased at the Reformation, reference to Lammas Day continued in the Prayer Book calendar, and the practice has been revived in some places in more recent years. The tradition of giving thanks for the firstfruits need not be limited to 1st August, and churches are at liberty to decide when to hold such a celebration.
The Lammas loaf should ideally be baked by members of the congregation, using local produce wherever possible.
Part of the Lammas loaf may be used as the eucharistic bread on this occasion.

Rogation Holy Communion

Rogation Sunday is the day when the Church has traditionally offered prayer for God’s blessings on the fruits of the earth and the labours of those who produce our food. The word “rogation” is from the Latin rogare, “to ask.” Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days before Ascension Day) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing on the crops for a bountiful harvest. In medieval England the Rogation Days were observed with processions that began in the local church and proceeded to outline the boundaries of the parish, pausing occasionally for the recitation of prayers. Priests and cross-bearers led these long walks in the countryside. Accordingly, the English sometimes called the Rogation Days the “Walking Days” from the Old Anglo-Saxon name for the observance, Gang Daegas, meaning approximately “Day of Going About.”
