St Andrew’s Roof Project

St Andrew’s is likely to have been the centre of a (deserted) Anglo-Saxon village originally. Eleven Anglo-Saxon stone sculptures are located inside, and early stone fragments can also be seen in its walls. It is very likely that an early wooden Church would have stood here in this period and it is believed to have been the location of a Synod in 768.
St Andrew’s has served the local community through the centuries with the patronage has been held by the local Fitzhugh and Wyvill families.

Finghall Church Roof Appeal

The church was reroofed in 1905 with local material in a style like many buildings in the area. However, in the last 20 years, the roof has started to fail, with tiles both slipping and delaminating. This has caused water ingress and damage to the internal plasterwork. In 2022 large areas of plaster crashed to the floor and the building was closed to public asccess. With the help and support of the local community, the internal plasterwork has now been removed and we returned to worship in the church on Christmas Day 2024.

The church needs a complete re-roof (estimated cost £250,000) because the condition of the thin stone slate tiles covering the nave roof (north and south slopes) is poor – the slates have bowed and many have broken over recent years.

Grants have been and will continue to be applied for.
