St Gregory’s is a welcoming church seven days of the week. Our lively approach to worship is an expression of our Christian faith which is joyful, infectious, and outward looking. This is carried out in the community, through practical service and through our active prayer ministry.
Once a month our alternative and imaginative Family Service presents the gospel in an interactive, noisy and fun manner. Whilst attractive to families with children the style of presentation makes it accessible to all. This service is prepared and led by a lay team; the sung worship is accompanied on the guitar, with drama, games and activities that engage the entire congregation. We also hold a variety of other services throughout the year e.g. an afternoon of children’s activities on Good Friday geared towards Easter, an Open Air service with Bedale Brass Band, Christingle service, and a Christmas nativity service that is loved by all for the fun of dressing up.
As well as the more visible mission and ministry of our church, we also value the role played by the unseen, less upfront members who help to make St Gregory’s an attractive environment in which to worship. Our reputation for hospitality is well known and anyone new to the area will be made welcome by us all.
Members of our church are active in supporting a number of missional groups, both local and overseas, including: ‘Meals on Wheels,’ ‘Hope Debt Advice,’ the local ‘Food Bank,’ ‘The Jonas Centre,’ ‘Tearfund,’ ‘Christian Blind Mission’ (CBM), ‘Ethiopian Compassion’ ‘Children’s Society’ and we are really excited that two of our congregation are in Liberia as missionaries. There are two Home Groups which meet regularly on Monday afternoons and Wednesday evenings.
Our youth club and work with local schools are key parts of our outreach as we believe that children are both our present and our future. Our monthly Parish lunch, held in the local pub, attracts people from the wider community, especially those who have lost a partner.
Our Church Building
The Church of St Gregory was built in 1840 is Grade 2 listed and serves Crakehall and the hamlet of Langthorne. It is located on the village green at the centre of the Great Crakehall Conservation Area. The building is surrounded by a variety of well-conserved dwellings, some of which date back 300 years or more. In addition to St Gregory’s, the village school, the filling station with its shop, and the Bay Horse public house are centres of the community. The Watermill mentioned in the ‘Doomsday Book,’ is at the side of the road over Crakehall Beck. Little Crakehall to the north of the beck, has grown over recent years with the building of new housing and the Village Hall.
